Handmade Carpets & Clean Energy

Energy is the raison d’etre of the fast moving contemporary world. Without energy all activity of the human race will freeze up into a suspended animation the way I freeze when my grandson points his little tender fingers at me and shouts with all his might ‘Statute’. Without energy all kind of machine, vehicle and gadgets will stop working. TVs will stop broadcasting and there will be no newspapers. Just think of a world where all communications break down. We will only be taking a fancy tour into the past unspoiled natural glory as if sitting on an invisible ‘time machine’.

How scary! Even scarier is the fast approaching demon called global warming – the bane of the massive burning of fossil fuel that keeps the economies move. Take a minute and watch at Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. A few years back little was the realization that energy could cause such colossal havoc leaving us without any exit to escape – if no urgent immediate step is taken the consequence is nothing but extinction of humanity, perhaps, in a couple of century.

It is ironic to know that energy is causing this mayhem but on the other hand it is energy that can solved this problem. The catch word is that it must be CLEAN ENERGY and to our great relief technology is there only it is not getting the kind of pressing attention it should get. There is a need that all the combustion fired automobiles – perhaps major cause of global warming - should be scraped and replaced by fuel cell cars. Perhaps there is not enough hydrogen being produced. But, I believe, the world has no shortage of geniuses and if they can come together it won’t be hard to produce enough hydrogen in the next few years. There is also the need that the developed world, who posses this technology, share it with rest of the world.

More and more people are getting conscious with the adversities that have started giving us a creepy feeling. I feel certain the world will start with greatest urgency in the near future. A lot also depends on consumers. The more they are aware the more they will shun purchasing goods the production of which generates most pollution. Only one multinational chain store travels more than one million km in a year. Just think of the pollution it causes. Add to it hundreds of other chain stores. The pollution they generate together must be mind boggling.

No doubt, handmade carpets too add a little pollution in the environment when it travels to far off lands. Otherwise least electrical energy is consumed during its production. Won’t it be then better that handmade carpets’ or any handicrafts’ sale is promoted with more gusto? After all the 70% of the energy consumed in manufacturing is clean energy. Can there be any energy cleaner than brawn energy!
